OSHKOSH, WI (WBAY) –  There is a rush on birth control as doctors say they are getting questions from women who are concerned President-elect Donald Trump may make it difficult to get.

Trump has said he is anti-abortion, and at one point in the campaign expressed that women who have abortions should be punished.

There is also concern his plans to repeal the Affordable Care Act may make contraception more expensive.

Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin said since the election about 10 percent more women are calling and want to talk about birth control.

“Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin takes care of 60,000 patients every year, so we’re seeing a pretty significant increase there,” said Koby Schellenger, regional field coordinator for Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin.

He said people are worried about access to affordable birth control and if they will have access to it under the new administration.

Many are asking about getting long-term birth control now, such as IUDs, which protect against pregnancy for three to 10 years, depending on the type of IUD.

“I think there’s a lot of anxiety out there. You know, people are afraid that their access to healthcare is going to go away,” Schellenger said.

Though some clinics are reporting that more women are asking about birth control, some doctors said it’s not something they should be necessarily rushing into.

“I don’t think anything with the government happens quickly generally, so I think they have some time,” said Dr. Jill Honkamp at Women’s Health Specialists. “Contraceptive coverage is very popular right now, so I think there’s going to be a backlash, obviously, if it’s not covered.”

Doctors said fear should not drive anyone to get a device and it’s important to talk about side effects with a professional before making the decision.
