The wife and daughter of a western Massachusetts World War II veteran have been reunited with a piece of their family’s history, thanks to another family’s surprising discovery.
A Springfield man was cleaning out his attic when he found a 72-year-old suitcase belonging to a local World War II veteran.
Bonnie Senecal told 22News her husband came down from the attic with the suitcase, and inside they found a World War II Civil Defense Helmet along with a military bag and tags that read “Frederick Consolmagno, 1946.”
With a little bit of research, they were able to track down Consolmagno’s 93-year-old wife and daughter in East Longmeadow and reunite them with their loved one’s belongings.
Consolmagno’s daughter, Laura Michaelian, sent 22News the photo above saying, “This is a picture of my father, the owner of the suitcase. His parents bought the house where she now lives and apparently, he or his parents put the suitcase there and forgot about it.”
Senecal said multiple families have lived in their current home since Consolmagno’s family had lived there, but no one ever found the suitcase in the attic.
