Winter weather brings the need to clean vehicles of road salt

Local News

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — The snow this weekend brought obvious hazards on the road. The garage at Mowery’s Collision is packed full from accidents due to this weekends weather.

This SUV was involved in a head-on collision, but there’s also the not so obvious. Cars throughout central Ohio are covered in road salt. Tom Buck is the manager here. He says clean your car as soon as possible.

“The salt they put down, the brine, will eat away at these cars,“ says Buck.

Cleaning your car to be shiny is nice for the visual appeal. Buck says, it’s important to make sure you clean the parts that cannot be seen.

“The underbody is especially important,“ said Buck. “Because all that salt and corrosion sits under there and can lead to rust.”

There are plenty of full-service carwash businesses in the area. All you need to do is pull-up, pay, and they’ll do the rest. Cleaning the underside of your car can be a task if you do it by yourself.

“We have things that will spray straight up at your car,” said Heaven Sagraves with Goo Goo Car Wash on West Broad Street.

Sagraves says it’s easier to let them clean your undercarriage or you’ll need to be super strong to do it alone, “Pretty hard, because you would probably have to lift your car up by yourself.”

Ultimately, a rusty car makes its structure weaker and that could lead to more serious damage if you are in an accident.
