COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Urban Meyer has been involved in several charities and community events since becoming coach in 2011.
When he’s not coaching players on the field, Urban Meyer has spent his time raising money for cancer research. The Urban and Shelley Meyer fund has helped raise money and recruit experts in the field of cancer research for the James.
According to the university, the two have been greatly affected by cancer. Coach Meyer’s father and mother were both survivors. Shelly’s stepmother is also a survivor of cancer.
The charity doesn’t stop there for Urban. He’s been greatly involved in the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer. In 2018, the cruise raised three million dollars. That was the most it raised in its 11-year history and 500,000 more than 2017.
The goal for next year is to raise one million dollars before the cruise takes sail February 2019. So far, its raised nearly $600,000.
NBC4 reached out to the organizers of the fundraising cruise to talk about Meyers contributions and its response to this paid administrative leave. A spokesperson declined our requests.
