DELAWARE, Ohio (WCMH) — A good Samaritan is dead and three teens remain hospitalized after falling into the Delaware Dam Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, Melvin Guerra Salvador, 20, from Columbus, died after jumping into the water to save one of the teenagers.

According to Tri Township Fire Department Chief Troy Morris, two people were able to get themselves out of the water before crews arrived, but two more remained in the water.

Morris said three of the people were in critical condition, while the fourth was “in better condition than the other three.” Delaware County Sheriff’s Office identified a 17-year-old from Columbus who was in life-threatening condition at Grady Memorial Hospital.

“I know the last two came out had been in the water for a while, but the water is very cold, so that gives them an opportunity,” he answered when asked about reports of two people dying as a result of being in the water. Morris estimated the two were in the water for about an hour.

Morris said the people were in a part of the river that was “dangerous if you don’t know how to swim.”

The group was apparently walking on a wall at the bottom of the dam to go fishing when their feet were swept out from under them by the water, Morris said.

Morris said the group appeared to be four young adults but did not know their exact ages. Earlier in the day, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office said there were children reportedly in the water.

The call for the water rescue was received at approximately 6:32 p.m.

In addition to Tri Township and the sheriff’s office, several other departments responded to help out at the scene. Morris said the Army Corp of Engineers closed down the dam to aid in the search.

Morris said three of the victims were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and one was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital.
