FRANKLIN CO., OH (WCMH) — Witness video of an officer-involved shooting in southwest Columbus captures the moments a suspect exchanges gunfire with law enforcement.
The sheriff’s office says 55-year-old Darrell J. Bruffy was shot and killed following a brief pursuit with a deputy that ended near Harrisburg Pike and Eakin Road Saturday.
In a video shared by Ryan Smith, gunshots echo around the intersection.
Smith was filming from the passenger seat of a car where he sat with his girlfriend.
“Oh my god, he’s shooting at the cop,” the woman says before Smith attempts to get out of the car. The gunfire lulls for about 10 seconds and then begins again.
Roughly 24 hours after the shootout, Smith returned to the scene, and spoke with NBC4 about what he saw.
“In the heat of the moment, you’re just thinking ‘oh my goodness, how many people are there,’” he explained. “It was definitely a traumatic experience.”
According to the Franklin County Sherif’s Office, the injured deputy remains hospitalized, but he is in “good spirits.”
Smith said he wishes that man a full recovery.
“Our thoughts and prayers were immediately on the officer for possibly giving his life to calm the situation down and making sure nobody else got hurt,” he said.
A spokesman with the sheriff’s office said more information on the incident will likely be released, on Monday.
