Vehicle with child inside stolen, then crashes in Hilltop

Local News

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Columbus police are searching for a suspect who allegedly stole a car with a 7-year-old child inside in the Hilltop Thursday afternoon.

The vehicle was stolen at about 4 p.m. after the mother of the child left the child inside of the vehicle with the car running.

The vehicle and the child were recovered after the suspect slammed the vehicle into a truck with a trailer at Midland Avenue and Hope Place in the Hilltop, according to Columbus police.

The crash occurred around the corner from where the vehicle was stolen. Midland Avenue north of Hope Place is now closed, police said.

The father of the child ran down the street and pulled the child out of the vehicle and took him to the hospital, police said.

The child’s mother sprained her ankle and was taken to Mount Carmel. The child is being treated at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Police said they believe a “younger person” stole the vehicle but currently do not have any information about the suspect.
