US 33 west reopens on southeast side, Watkins Road likely to remain closed ‘for months’

Local News

All lanes of U.S. 33 westbound have reopened at Interstate 270 on the southeast side after a truck struck the Watkins Road bridge, but it could be months before Watkins Road reopens.

A truck struck the bridge around 2pm Thursday, closing all lanes of U.S. 33 west and Watkins Road. U.S. 33 reopened just before 10pm Thursday night, but the Ohio Department of Transportation said that Watkins Road will remain closed indefinitely.

Inspectors determined the damaged beam cannot support the full load of traffic traveling overhead, so Watkins Road will remain closed until the beam can be replaced. ODOT said it will likely be months before the beam is replaced and the road reopens.

Support beams have been placed beneath the damaged bridge to allow safe passage on U.S. 33 west.
