Urban Strings alum talk about their involvement with the group

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Columbus based “Urban Strings” alumni orchestra will essentially be the opening act before a VIP group at the Ohio Theatre Wednesday night. When the former orchestra members were a part of the group, they were young boys and girls needing a place to play.

Julius Porter attends Howard University and said, “It’s a big deal,” with a smile on his face.

Porter said the orchestra offered him a friend group and exposed him to music outside of the classical standards.

“I was playing African-American music, which was really nice,” said Porter. “You have to be in tune with your culture.”

Porter and other members pulled out their violins, bass, and cello to tune-up together at Philip Lutheran Church on East Long Street. They wanted to make sure they were in sync before hearing the classic, Paganini’s violin.
