UPDATE: 4-year-old dies from injuries after crash during police chase in Pickaway Co.

PICKAWAY COUNTY, OH (WCMH) — A man and child were killed and another child was critically injured in a crash during a police pursuit.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, at about 7:38pm, Sunday, troopers were advised that the South Bloomfield Police Department was involved in a pursuit on U.S. 23 northbound near S.R. 762.

At 7:44pm, OSHP troopers were informed that the vehicle had crashed during the pursuit into a tree on S.R. 762 near Walker Road.

Troopers say Yoni Cruz Martinez, 35, of Columbus was driving a 2014 Hyundai Elantra at a high rate of speed westbound on S.R. 762, when the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree.

Martinez, who troopers say wasn’t restrained at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Two other passengers, a 3-year-old child and a 4-year-old child, were critically injured in the crash and were taken by helicopter to Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The 4-year-old, Rojer Lemus died at the hospital.

According to troopers, the Ohio State Highway Patrol was not involved in the pursuit but will be handling the fatal crash investigation. 

The South Bloomfield Police Department will be investigating the pursuit.
