Two injured, horse killed when car crashes into carriages in Hocking County

LAURELVILLE, OH (WCMH) –Two people were injured, and a horse was killed after a car hit two horse-drawn carriages in Hocking County. 

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, at about 9:44pm, Sunday, a 17-year-old was driving a BMW on SR-180 near Defenbaugh Road in Laurelville, when the vehicle failed to maintain assured clear distance ahead and struck a horse-drawn wagon with Roman H. Hershberger, 23, Lizzie H. Hershberger, 22, and Mary H. Hershberger, 25, riding inside. 

The wagon struck by the BMW then struck a second horse-drawn carriage ahead of it with David H. Herberger, 21, and Ervin H. Hershberger, 17, inside it.  

Both carriages then went off the right side of the roadway, killing one of the horses involved.  

Lizzie H. Hershberger was taken by helicopter to Grant Medical Center, and Mary H. Hershberger was taken to Hocking Valley Community Hospital.  

The crash remains under investigation.
