This summer, our team is launching an exciting initiative with BESA, an organization that makes it easy to volunteer and connect in our community.
We’re calling it the NBC4 Today Summer of Giving and we want you to be a part of the movement.
Each month, the NBC4 Today team will highlight a local charity, BESA will organize a volunteer opportunity and together we will chip in to make Central Ohio a little better.
This week we are launching the project with a special tie-in for Mother’s Day. Our featured charity is the Columbus Diaper Coalition.
It is surprising to many, but diapers are not considered a necessity so WIC and SNAP don’t cover them. Local food pantries, shelters and clinics often don’t have the budget to provide them either. But groups like the Columbus Diaper Coalition are stepping in to fill that gap.
Each month, the all-volunteer group packages 30,000 diapers for local organizations to distribute.
“It’s very distressing to a mom, as you know, if your baby is crying you’re thinking they’re hungry their diaper is dirty. And if you can’t give your baby what you need that causes stress for parents that can cause post-partum depression and mental illness,” said Sarah Hastie, Columbus Diaper Coalition “And if a baby is left too long in a diaper that’s soiled they can get infections they can get sick which contributes to medical bills for a family. So a small thing like a diaper has a huge impact”
According to the Columbus Diaper Coalition, the cost to diaper a baby for one month is about $100, a significant amount of money especially for those living in poverty. On average 1 in 3 families in Central Ohio are struggling to afford diapers.
The need is great and you can help by volunteering with us on May 12th from 10 AM to 12 PM. We are going to be packaging diapers for an annual baby shower that helps expecting mothers in need.
