WESTERVILLE, OH (WCMH) – Police say a student has been charged after bringing a realistic-looking BB gun to a Westerville Central football game.
According to Genoa Township police, officers were tipped off by students that someone was carrying a gun. Because of vague information, the student was not found that night.
The next day, police found a social media post showing the boy lifting his shirt to show what appeared to be a gun.
The student was identified with the help of tips from several other students.
Police said the 14-year-old middle school student was charged with possession of a gun in a school safety zone.
“This incident could have ended tragically if officers encountered this individual carrying this BB gun which is indistinguishable from a real firearm without close examination. We want to thank those students who did the right thing by helping us identify this individual,” said Genoa Township Chief of Police Steve Gammill.
