If you are planning on going to OSU’s campus around the Wexner Medical Center or the Shoe next week, you will need to plan ahead because of two ramp closures.
The SR 315 Medical Center ramp will be temporarily closing on May 7 and remain closed through Mid-August. The on-ramp to 315 from Cannon Drive will be closing from June 11 through late November.
Drivers can use Goodale Street or Lane Avenue to Olentangy River Road for the Medical Center closing. For the 315 southbound ramp closure from Cannon Drive, drivers can use Neil Avenue south or John Herrick Drive to Woody Hayes Dr. then north on Kenny Road to the Lane Avenue ramp.
If you are a student, staff or faculty member and are getting into or out of OSU’s campus, Director of Marketing and Communications Dan Hedman said the CABS, Campus Area Bus System runs from the parking lots every three minutes during peak hours and every ten minutes during off-peak times.
The first closure has been timed to avoid huge numbers of people coming and going on campus.
“So the exit ramp from 315 to Medical Center Drive will close the day after commencement, and will open back up in mid-August. The hope is to do most of that work when students are off campus and prior to football season,” Hedman said.
Sean and Kathy Walther are moving their daughter Megan out of Lincoln Tower, which sits right between the ramps and Ohio Stadium.
“It seems like they have planned it out pretty well, the best they can, especially with football season, having 315 access is critical,” said Walther.
Parking lots and bus routes have been tweaked to accommodate the loss of the Polo Lot which use to be on Cannon Drive.
“Any way we can cut back on traffic during game day, but even just in general is a good thing,” Walther said.
Hedman said those parking in the outer parking lots like Carmack and Buckeye can park and ride the bus to campus in 10 minutes. He said OSU just completed a transit hub on Herrick Drive before ramps are closed.
“The idea there is to reduce the amount of traffic in and around the area. We want make sure patients and visitors can get into the medical center. Want to make sure students get to class. So for a couple of years, it is going to create some issues,” Hedman said.
Visitors and patients to the Wexner Medical Center can either valet park or use the hospital parking garages.
Hedman said there are around 100,000 students, staff and faculty on campus during the semester, but they are leaving it up to the individual about where to park and using mass transit.
