A South High School girls basketball coach has been temporarily relieved of his duties with the team after a picture surfaced online of the coach and the team making an inappropriate hand gesture.
Coach Pat Bowling is under investigation after Bowling and members of the team were photographed with their middle fingers extended as part of a photo shoot at the school.
“(It’s) disappointing to see that type of picture on social media,” said Scott J. Varner, a spokesman for Columbus City Schools. “This inappropriate picture was part of a larger photo shoot at the school. Everyone involved should have recognized that it was not a proper representation of the school, the Columbus City League, or the qualities of good sportsmanship and respect that we expect in all of our scholar-athletes.”
An assistant coach will supervise the team for a short time while officials investigate the incident.
Varner said Bowling, the players and others involved will be interviewed to help school officials “better understand what specifically transpired and help them best understand the consequences of this type of action and display.”
