The first significant snowstorm of the season dropped about 4 inches of snow on central Ohio by 7 p.m. Saturday, and another 1 to 3 inches are expected to fall this evening and overnight, according to NBC4 Meteorologist Ben Gelber. The total snowfall in the region will exceed 6 inches a little southwest of the city.

NBC4 crews captured photos and videos of snowfall in Columbus, Grove City, Groveport and other parts of central Ohio as early as 7 a.m. and throughout the day.

Crews with the Ohio Department of Transportation reported to work at 6 a.m. today and had about 130 trucks treating roads and highways in preparation for the first significant snowfall of the season.

Snow showers moved in from the southwest part of the state, and work east and north through the morning hours and into the afternoon.

While NBC4 Meteorologist David Mazza said he does not anticipate really heavy snowfall rates, he said residents will have snow around a “1/4″-1/3″ per hour for a good period of the day, and into the evening.”

Mazza said he expects the snowfall to yield about three to four inches of snow north of Columbus, with one to two inches of snow north of the US-30 corridor.

In the southeast part of the state, we could have some slightly warmer air mixing in, and could mix rain showers which would reduce snow depths, Mazza said.

Sunday morning the snow showers should end early, and give way to mostly cloudy skies and highs in the middle 30s, he said. Monday will be cool and cloudy early with some sun late and highs in the lower 30s, he said.

Clouds will be the rule next week, as we will see a mix of clouds Tuesday, otherwise mostly cloudy skies the rest of the week.  Temps will be near normal Tuesday in the middle 30s.

Temperatures are expected to climb on Wednesday into the upper 30s, before a weak system works in overnight into Thursday, Mazza said.  This will give us a cooler day Thursday, followed by a warm-up to near 40 on Friday with a shower late.
