COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Not long ago there were 2 obvious signs you were in the Short North, those arches over High Street and a lack of parking.
But just weeks into a revamped parking system that shifted public parking onto once only residential streets, removed meters and added an app to pay create a new problem. Confusion.
“Yesterday we tried to use it and it didn’t have one of our zones in it so we couldn’t even park there,” said Genny Wenstrup.
Sam Earp is a 2nd-year law student and has lived in the area a little less than two years. He was able to obtain his own permit but he’s still not sure how to get a guest pass because he also says the app is confusing.
“It’s fairly disorganized as of right now. I shouldn’t have to call to figure out how to get a guest pass so that if someone visits me they don’t get a ticket over the next few weekends,” said Earp.
Kelly Collett also says the app is a real pain.
“It’s just kind of throwing people off,” she said.
Beyond all that, a nationwide outage of the permitting system the city of Columbus is using forced the city to push back the grace period for issuing real parking tickets with real parking fines to February 19th.
It’s unrelated but it’s adding more confusion for drivers.
“They’ve made it overcomplicated by trying to fix it and I think it just added more problems,” said Collett.
And those drivers aren’t so sure this new system fixed anything.
“I don’t feel like it has. I don’t think so,” said Wenstrup.
NBC4 reached out to parking enforcement in the city of Columbus for a comment. Their reply was more explanation of the system vs. a response. A spokesperson emailed NBC4 stating that permitting and application is done online and management of that permit or paying for parking is done through the park Columbus app.
