Short North business owners hope parking validation plan helps with parking concerns

Local News

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Businesses in the Short North are taking steps to help alleviate parking concerns in the popular district.

The Short North Alliance is launching a pilot parking program to encourage people to continue shopping in the Short North.

For nearly two years, construction in the Short North has made parking a struggle.

“Our meters have been taken away every now and then so that has been rough,” said Emily Griffith, a grocery clerk at Oats & Barley Market.

Oats & Barley Market opened right in the thick of construction. Not pulling in the number of customers they’ve hoped for.

“When there is no parking down here people are like, ‘No I’m not going to come down,’” Said Griffith.

Shoppers have started to grow impatient.

“Parking is definitely frustrating just about every day,” said shopper, Jayme Barton.

Starting Monday, April 9th through the end of October, the Short North Alliance is hoping parking woes become a thing of the past.

“As a community, we’ve banded together and some of our largest property owners helped make a parking validation program,” said Betsy Pandora, Executive Director of the Short North Alliance.

Similar to the parking at the North Market, shoppers who visit the district during the day and park at the three different garages featured at different phases will get their parking validated by select business and pay a dollar for the first hour.

The Castle garage on Second and High expected to kick off the program was scheduled to start validations Monday, but because of construction shoppers will have to park at The Hub garage on East Hubbard Avenue.

Businesses like Rocket Fizz Soda Pop and Candy Shop find the delay of the Castle Garage opening frustrating.

“There is a lot of construction that people are going to have to navigate on foot so I don’t really believe that The Hub will benefit us as much as The Castle garage but I am optimistic that we are coming up with some options,” said Lindsey Maher, co-owner of the Rocket Fizz Soda Pop and Candy Shop.

The Short North Alliance says The Castle garage is expected to open later in April and start validating.
