COLUMBUS (WCMH) — In anticipation of the snowfall expected this weekend, shelves of Central Ohio stores are wiped out of some items and workers are busy replenishing inventories in the hours leading up to the weekend.

At the Ace Hardware on 5th Avenue in Grandview, employees say customer traffic started picking up early in the week with people buying novelty items like sleds.

But they say toward the end of the week more and more  people started buying ice melt and shovels.

It’s the same story at other stores we visited throughout the area. The smaller bags and jugs of ice melt sold quickly.

Workers say it’s more common for people to buy jugs of ice melt since they’re easier to carry and you can use the container to distribute the product on your sidewalks and driveway.

The other hot item seems to be ergonomic snow shovels.

Customer Adam Suarez explains why he prefers them over traditional snow shovels.

“I just need something metal that can chip at ice a little bit better than the plastic shovels and we don’t have a huge driveway so this 18 incher is going to do the job for us. It’s all about the curvature,” he said.

To give you an idea how busy the Grandview Ace Hardware has been, employees there say they ordered about 300 large bags of ice melt this month and have already sold about 100.
