PIKE COUNTY, OH (WCMH) – The Pike County Sheriff’s Office says a gunman was apprehended without incident after responding to a report of a hostage situation.
According to a release from the sheriff’s office, the incident was first reported Tuesday around 9:42 p.m. Someone called 911 to report that her friend and her friend’s young children were being held against their will by a person who fired several shots into the air.
According to Reader, the suspect told police he would not go unless it was “in a body bag or handcuffs.”
Deputies were able to de-escalate the situation and arrest the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Benjamin Hawk of Jackson.
“It was apparent he had been drinking a lot of alcohol. He had a gun on him that we were able to get away from him without incident,” said Reader.
Reader credited crisis intervention training with keeping the situation from getting out of control.
Hawk was taken to Adena Medical Center in Chillicothe. Charges are pending.
Reader said a gun and two bottles of liquor were collected by deputies.
