COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – The Columbus Board of Education has awarded 11 million dollars to renovate the heating and air conditioning systems at four local schools.
West High School, Sherwood Middle School, Moler Elementary and Duxberry Park Elementary will all have air conditioning in all classrooms for the first time in their histories. The money is part of the Operation Fix It Initiative, which was approved by voters to improve CCS school buildings. The plan is to have those systems installed for the start of the 2018-2019 school year. The decision has parents and students excited about the changes to their school, particularly those who attend West High School. Shannon Maxwell, a proud mom watched her son play baseball for one of the last times at west high school.
The senior is on his way out soon, so he won’t benefit from the 11 million dollar renovation project that will bring air-conditioning and heating to this school, but his mother isn’t too bothered.
“I think it’s fantastic. We pay good taxes for our city to work hard for us so what they’re doing for these schools is definitely needed,” said Maxwell.
No one knows this more than its student Katie Grace.
“Inside the school and classroom it’s the degrees as outside or worse, we will be sweating,” said Grace.
Her friend Paige Lyons said things got so bad, she even got sick.
“It’s really hot in there. I know one time my freshman year or my sophomore year I had to work out of the class cause it got so hot like I couldn’t breathe in the class at all. It was horrible,” said Lyons.
“They have to hand out water throughout the whole school because, so none of us get sick from the heat,” said student Katie Grace.
They find it surprising the problem is now being fixed.
“It kind of seems like a joke because it’s been so long,” said Lyons.
Grace said students even, but that wasn’t enough to get the district to fix the problem.
“We always complained and make posts and tag Columbus City Schools in it, and that didn’t change it until this year,” said Grace.
But they are thankful something is finally being done.
