COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Columbus police say porch thefts are on the rise, and those thefts usually peak around the holidays.
This past week, Amazon had its big annual Prime Day sale which police say say led to thieves lurking in neighborhoods across the city/
“It’s really a matter of availability,” said Columbus Police commander Mark Lang. “The more packages that are out there that are unsecured, the more we’re going to see thefts.”
You can call it the cost of convenience when you get your packages delivered directly to your porch. There’s always a risk of theft.
“It can take unfortunately just a second to run up to a door grab a package and walk back to you’re car,” said Lang.
One suspected thief was caught on camera stealing a package off someone’s porch in the Victorian Village. The thief stayed around a little longer than a second.
Jetta Mencer and police believes the man in the video also broke into several garages.
“I saw my garage door which had a deadbolt on it, like the frame was cut,” said Mencer.
Now her garage door and a few others have a piece of 2×4 acting as a temporary lock.
She was on vacation when it all happened, but she is not surprised by what she saw in the video. She’s lived in the Victorian Village since 2003.
“It’s been a problem for a long time here,” said Mencer. “It’s really not safe around here I would say to leave things and packages on your porch and have things delivered because it seems like there’s somebody always prowling.”
If you need to have something delivered here are some tips from Columbus Police.
- Get the item delivered to your office or job if you’re allowed.
- Ask a neighbor if they’re available to put the package in their house when it arrives
- Put the package in your home as soon as its delivered.
If you have any information on the person involved in these burglaries you’re asked to contact police.
