Pipe bomb found in vacant home in Athens County

ATHENS COUNTY, OH (WCMH) – The Athens County Sheriff’s Office detonated a home-made pipe bomb found in an abandoned home.

According to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office, they were called to a home on the 7300 block of Radford Road Wednesday night on an open door complaint at a vacant home. When deputies checked inside, they found what appeared to be bomb-making materials.

The Franklin County bomb squad and the Ohio Division of State Fire Marshal was called to assist.

A device resembling a live bomb was taken from the home. It was taken to a secure location and detonated. Deputies determined it was a home-made pipe bomb.

“At this time, there are no threats to the surrounding area and the scene has been completely secured.  Our investigation is ongoing however, we are asking that if anyone has information pertinent to this case, to please contact the Sheriff’s Office at 740.593.6633,” said Sheriff Rodney Smith.
