COLUMBUS (WCMH) — A woman is dead after being struck by a car moments after she stepped off a transit bus.

Columbus Police said the woman, Marian R. Hughes, 27, of Columbus, was a passenger on a COTA bus that was traveling south on Alum Creek Drive Monday at approximately 12:40 p.m.

The bus stopped just south of Winslow Drive, which is where Hughes exited the bus.

As she stepped around the front of the bus in an attempt to cross Alum Creek, a pickup truck was also traveling south on Alum Creek in the left-hand southbound lane, according to Columbus Police.

Hughes stepped into the left-hand southbound lane and was struck by the pickup truck, driven by Gevorg Hunanyan, police said.

Hughes suffered serious injuries and was taken to Ohio Health Grant Medical Center, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The accident is still under investigation.

This is the first traffic-related fatality of 2020.
