One man has died and a suspect has been taken into custody for questioning after a shooting in Whitehall Thursday afternoon, according to Whitehall police.
Whitehall police responded to a report of a shooting before 2:30 p.m. at Langley Avenue and South Hamilton Road and found a man lying on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound.
The victim was transported to Mount Carmel East Hospital where he later died, according to police.
Whitehall Police took a male suspect into custody a short distance away at Kroger, 850 S. Hamilton Road, police said.
The incident remains under investigation and the identities of the victim and suspect are being released at this time, police said.
According to a criminal complaint obtained by NBC4, 21-year-old Treyrek D. Hairston was arrested and charged with murder. He is currently being held in the Franklin County jail awaiting arraignment in municipal court tomorrow morning.
Nearby schools were placed on lockdown as a safety precaution after the shooting was reported, according to police.
The shooting was not in a school zone and no students were in danger at any time, according to police.
