One dead in West Jefferson trailer fire

Local News

WEST JEFFERSON, Ohio (WCMH) — Jefferson Township firefighters found a man’s body inside an abandoned trailer Tuesday morning.

Investigators say they are working to identify the victim.

The firefighters were responding to a call of smoke coming from a trailer behind the Lazy J Western Shop on State Route 29 just south of I-70.  When they arrived they found the trailer fully engulfed in flames and the man’s body inside.

Larry Johnson, owner of the property, said he has not lived in the trailer for 10 years and said he had not given anyone permission to stay there.

Johnson said he closed the store several years ago for health reasons. He said both the store and the trailer have been vandalized.

“They’ve broken into the trailer a number of different times,” Johnson said. “There’s no water, no electric on it since we moved out.”

“I think people got in there and, in turn, tried to start a fire in the fireplace,” Johnson said.

The man’s body was taken to Montgomery County Morgue for an autopsy. His identity has not been released at this time.
