Northridge Local Schools trying again to pass levy

Local News

Northridge School District officials are hoping that the fourth time is the charm when asking voters for a revamped income-tax and bond issue that will cover the cost of a brand new elementary school.

The district is not giving up when it comes to asking voters to pass a 0.5 percent income tax, lower than the last three previous proposals, plus a 2.8 mill bond on May 8th.

“We are our voters to vote yes on the levy which will allow us to build a new elementary school central to the entire district,” said Superintendent, Scott Schmidt.

The tax would be on earned income, while the bond would cost taxpayers $98 for every $100,000 home. The existing bond used to pay for Northridge High School will end this year.

“That collects at $86 right now, so the difference is actually $12,” said Schmidt.

“Its $12 dollars more, that’s not a lot of money more,” said parent, Brittany Ellis.

Brittany Ellis has a daughter in the third grade that attends Northridge Primary School. Next year her other daughter Emma will be in kindergarten. Ellis will be voting yes on May 8th.

“It is not a safe environment for our children to be in anymore,” said Ellis

The district says the 95-year-old elementary school building continues to deteriorate, with ventilation issues. Last winter students had to use outdoor port-a-potties after a sewage line collapsed.

Michael Barenett has a “vote no” on the school bond sign in his front yard and says the district just needs to make repairs to the existing school.

“The tax base is very small in this area we would like to keep it that way,” said Barnett.

Students from Alexandria, Hartford Township and homer all attend Northridge schools. This new elementary school would be at a central location for all families.

“Safety is a top priority and just knowing that my kid is just five, ten minute down the road and can have that safe learning environment that they deserve I am absolutely 100-percent willing to put them on that bus and go down the road a little bit,” said Ellis.
