Newark Police search for suspect after report of attempted child abduction near elementary school

NEWARK, OH (WCMH) — Newark Police are searching for a man who attempted to abduct a 10-year-old child on Tuesday around 4pm.

It happened in the area of Marion Court and E. Main Street. Police said the main is described as 5’9”, heavy-set, wearing a tan coat and black hat. He was driving a black SUV, possibly a Chevy Trailblazer.

“It’s depressing, upsetting,” said neighbor Robert Freeman.

With an elementary school just across the street, Freeman and other residents have taken it upon themselves to organize a neighborhood watch.

They keep an eye out for kids who live nearby, where there was just an attempted abduction.

“We have a lot of elementary classes, which is right across the street down here behind us that we kind of watch going back and forth,” he said. “We like to watch the kids and make sure they’re getting home safe.”

Newark Police said a man tried to entice the 10-year-old to get into his car. When he failed, he tried to grab the child. The child was able to escape and ran home.

“It just makes you fearful for the kids. It makes me fearful for my grandson,” said neighbor Troy Miracle.

He said he’s glad the child go away and reminds parents to stay vigilant.

“Really grateful because the story would’ve been very different…I just hope they catch this guy,” he said. “You just can’t lose focus of this can happen. This could happen to your kid. It could someone else’s kid. There’s still people out there that are sicko’s and still out there, looking and waiting.”

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Detective Michael Lake at 740-670-7924.
