NEWARK, OH (WCMH) — The suspect in a carjacking at a Newark Walmart has been arrested.

According to the Newark Division of Police, at about 12:15am, Wednesday, officers were called to the report of a robbery in the Walmart parking lot on North 21st Street.

The female victim told officers that as she exited her vehicle, she was approached by a man wearing a bandana over his face.

The female reported the man demanded her car keys while keeping his hands tucked under his sweatshirt, indicating he had a weapon.

The man drove from the scene in the victim’s vehicle after she complied with his demands and gave him her keys.

Several hours later, the female’s vehicle was found in the area of Westmoor Avenue, and officers took a suspect, William J. Russell, 19, into custody.

Police say Russell confessed to the crime after being interviewed by detectives.

Russell was taken to the Licking County Justice Center on robbery charges and could face additional charges after the case was forwarded to the prosecutor’s office.
