Nelsonville officer fired over accusations of racist Facebook post

Local News

Nelsonville police officer Joshua Braglin was fired from the department for an alleged racist social media post against the Hocking College interim police chief.

City Council voted 6-0, with one member absent, accepting a recommendation from the city manager to fire the officer.

The Nelsonville city manager says it was actually the police chief who made the first recommendation to terminate Joshua Braglin from the force after completing the department’s investigation on the officer and a second disciplinary hearing held Tuesday.

A room full of protesters backed the decision Wednesday night. They broke into chants of ‘black lives matter’ moments before the recommendation was made.

“I am glad that they decide to support the recommendation that this officer be fired,” said Andrea Reany, one of the protesters in attendance.

Reany will soon become a resident of Nelsonville and says no type of racism is acceptable in the town.

“He is not only a threat to the residents of color and the students of color that live in Nelsonville but every resident of Nelsonville,” said Reany.

City officials say they have been investigating Braglin since last November, after learning of racist social media posts on the officer’s Facebook page about Hocking College interim police chief Tifany Tims.

Last Friday, the Dayton chapter of the NAACP called for Braglin’s firing. At the time, Braglin was on unpaid administrative leave.

Community members and local activists say although they are satisfied with today’s recommendation, there is still local justice work to be done.

“The fact that it took so long is concerning to me and I think that it means that there are more problems within the police force,” said Tyler Barton.

Council president Ed Mash says they will look at the social media policy for officers and discuss revisions to make sure a case like this doesn’t happen again.
