NCAA Tournament returns to Columbus

Local News

One year after Columbus hosted the NCAA Women’s Final Four, the first and second rounds of the men’s tournament will be returning to Nationwide Arena.

This will be the fifth time the men’s tournament has been held in Central Ohio, with the games last here in 2015.

The tournament is expected to draw more than 25,000 fans to the area.

Businesses are already preparing for what is expected to be a busy weekend.

“We do a week’s worth of business in about two days,” said Stephen Hutson, the assistant general manager of Gordon Biersch.

At Boston’s, owner Tim Emery is hoping business will be as good, if not better than the last time the tournament was in town.

“Four years ago, when we hosted the men’s tournament, that Friday we were the host for West Virginia,” he said. “At that time, we had the biggest day of any Boston’s ever in the United States.”

Several bars and restaurants will play host to fans from the eight teams, during the weekend. Those establishments are as follows:

  • Half Pint – Washington
  • R Bar – Cincinnati
  • Gordon Biersch – North Carolina and Colgate
  • Boston’s — Tennessee
  • Three-legged Mare – Utah State and Iowa
  • Bd’s Mongolian Grill — Iona

Fans will also be able to see the teams practice, on Thursday. The practice schedule is below:

11 – 11:40 pm                         Iowa
11:45 pm – 12:25 pm            Colgate
12:30 pm – 1:10 pm               Cincinnati
