MORPC offering prizes to those choosing public transportation to commute

Local News

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission wants you to rethink your ride.

For the third year, MORPC and its partners are working to improve air quality and reduce traffic, by promoting sustainable transportation across the region. That includes carpools, bicycles, walking or public transit.

“You think, ‘Maybe the bus isn’t for me, or I wouldn’t like to carpool.’ But every year, we’ve had an increase of new people that have tried something,” said MORPC Senior Business Outreach Coordinator Patty Olmsted.

“Last year, 36 percent of people that tried something stuck with it after the commuter challenge.”

Travel options that are better for the environment, could be better for you, too.

“It’s building up a following. People are enjoying it. They’re really excited about winning those prizes,” said Olmsted.

Those prizes include a $25 gift card, and the chance to win one of the grand prizes: A $100, $200 or $300 gift card.

To participate in the challenge, register at, and start logging your daily commute. Prize winners are picked randomly, but the more you ride, the higher your chances of winning.

“Our ultimate goal is behavior change… You know, encouraging people to try something new,” said Olmsted.

The challenge runs now through Friday, July 27.
