Mexican restaurant in west Columbus gets firm warning from health department

Local News

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — A West Side Mexican restaurant gets another firm warning from the health department. And a New York City chef who left the rat race 14 years ago for Columbus received the coveted NBC 4 Up To Code Award.

It’s the third time this year that NBC 4 Investigator Tom Sussi has reported on La Plaza Tapatia at 4233 Shoppers Lane. The Franklin County Public Health Department has inspected them five times, uncovering a total of 76 violations.

On Tuesday, the restaurant’s owner and manager met with the health department for what’s called an administrative hearing.

The bottom line? If inspectors find any “new or repeat” violations at next week’s follow up inspection, La Plaza Tapatia could have its license “suspended or revoked.” The health department said the “facility must work to adopt a responsible food safety culture and ensure that all food safety rules are being followed.”

The restaurant’s manager said they’ve already addressed many of the health department’s concerns, like having its employees get food safety training.

The recipient of this week’s NBC 4 Up To Code Award is Iron Grill Barbeque and Brew, 5295 North High Street, Columbus.
