Mayor: Kirkersville Police Chief dies at Reynoldsburg home

Local News

Just months into becoming the head of the Kirkersville Police Department, Chief James Hughes Jr. has passed away, according to Mayor Terry Ashcraft.

Ashcraft said he received a call just afternoon on Friday from the Reynoldsburg Division of Police, informing him Hughes passed away at his home. Ashcraft said the cause of death is unknown at this time, but an autopsy will be performed in the coming days.

Hughes assumed the position in March 2018 after Jeff Finley resigned from the post, citing a hostile work environment.

This is the second police chief Kirkersville has lost tragically in the last 13 months. In May 2017, Chief Steven Eric DiSario was shot and killed in the line of duty during a hostage situation near the Pine Kirk Care Center.
