MARION (WCMH) — A tragic murder-suicide has left three children without their mother this holiday season.

According to Marion Police, 34-year-old Kelsey Rinehart was killed by her boyfriend, identified as Destin Walters, before he took his own life. Authorities say Walters stabbed Rinehart multiple times before slitting his own throat in front of his daughter.

The typically quiet Easy Street neighborhood felt eerie Friday as word about the tragedy spread.

Ginger O’Brien knew Walters for years and is in shock.

“Just,..just despair. I still can’t fathom…I just can’t wrap my head around it,” O’Brien said. “Don’t seem like it’s possible, you know?”

Investigators say Walters’ daughter and his daughter’s boyfriend were inside the home when it happened. The daughter’s boyfriend called the police.

“To do what he’s done, I just can’t believe it. It’s so sad,” O’Brien said.

Police say Rinehart’s death leaves three children, all under the age of 11, behind.

“I feel sorry for the kids,” O’Brien said. “That’s very upsetting to me when you think of little kids. Now they don’t have a mother, you know? That’s sad.”

Officials say Walters had a criminal record, including a history of domestic violence against other women. The case remains under investigation.
