Man shot and killed during confrontation with Mansfield police

MANSFIELD, Ohio (WCMH) — A man was shot and killed Monday afternoon during a confrontation with police in Mansfield.

Police were called to an apartment on the 600 block of West Straub Road around 4:25 p.m. on a report of someone breaking in. The caller told police the suspect was possibly intoxicated or under the influence of drugs.

The caller also told police the suspect had a box cutter.

Police said they confronted the suspect, who they described as ‘highly agitated.’ Officers said the man had already injured himself with a cutting instrument.

Officers used Tasers, which had no effect on the suspect, according to police. Police said the confrontation then escalated and resulted in the suspect being fatally shot.

Ohio BCI was requested to conduct the investigation into the shooting. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave per department policy.

The officers involved were identified as Officer Matt Davis, Officer Thayne Telquist and Officer Scott Kotterman.
