Man killed, 3-year-old injured in head-on crash in Athens County

ATHENS, OH (WCMH) - A Meigs County man is dead and a 3-year-old child is hospitalized after a two-vehicle head-on crash in Athens County.

It happened around 1:50pm Friday afternoon on County Road 33A, just northwest of Robinson Road. According to the Athens Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Joshua Paul Kauff, 36, of Pomeroy, was driving a 2003 Ford Taurus southeast on CR-33A when an oncoming Ford F-150, driven by Benjamin James Dalton Lee, 30, of Athens, went left of center and struck the car head-on.

Kauf was pronounced dead on the scene by the Athens County Coroner’s Office. Kauff’s passenger, a 3-year-old child, was airlifted to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says Kauff was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. The young child was in a child seat.

Lee was taken to O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens, where he was treated and released.

The crash remains under investigation.
