Man found dead after early morning house fire in north Columbus

COLUMBUS (WCMH) – One man is dead after an early morning fire in north Columbus.

Firefighters were dispatched to the 1100 block of Vinewood Drive around 4:54am Sunday. When firefighters arrived, flames were showing from the home. Firefighters say the blaze started on the upstairs level of the home.

According to Battalion Chief Steve Martin, the occupants of the home told firefighters that everyone had evacuated from the residence. Firefighters contained the fire and upon preforming a secondary sweep of the structure, they found an adult male on the lower level. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene. It is not known whether the man died from fire-related injuries or another cause.

Battalion Chief Martin said detectives with the Columbus Division of Police homicide unit have been called in to conduct a concurrent investigation in case the Franklin County Coroner’s Office determines the man died from causes other than the fire.

Investigators believe three renters lived at the home.

“Until we know for sure what the cause of death was, this could be a criminal investigation,” Martin said.
