HILLIARD, OH (WCMH) — Hilliard police are investigating after a man was pronounced dead when the vehicle he was in was found submerged in a pond.

Hilliard police have identified that man as 70-year-old Robert Daugherty of Columbus.

Authorities were called to a pond on Allisons Way and Kathyrn Way around 10:40am Thursday.

Witness Joseph Smith and his wife were taking their morning walk when the couple spotted something in the water.

“I looked down and there was just a little break in the water and my wife first said is that a turtle, I said no. We looked a little closer and we could see the outline of a truck,” said Smith.

Smith then called 911. Hilliard police, Washington Township and Norwich Township responded to the call.

“We got divers in the water and we learned that there was someone that was in the vehicle,” said Hilliard Police Chief, Robert Fisher.

Emergency crews took Daugherty to a local hospital where authorities say he later died.

“Right now we don’t know for sure what led up to him driving into the water,” said Fisher.
