PLAIN CITY, Ohio (WCMH) – Firefighter crews battled a massive blaze where a building was engulfed in flames Tuesday morning in Plain City.

According to a release by the Pleasant Valley Joint Fire District, a commercial structure fire was reported just after 4 a.m. Tuesday morning in Plain City. A person who was working inside Whitmer Woodworks said he heard a “pop” and noticed fire coming from one of the machines that was in operation at the business.

The crew from the initial arriving fire engine observed heavy smoke with flames coming from the roof of Whitmer Woodworks, located at 8490 Carters Mill Road. They attempted to quash the blaze from inside but due to intense heat and fire conditions the firefighters had to retreat.

All responding units then formed a defensive attack around the building to ensure the blaze did not spread beyond the main building, which spans 14,000 square feet. This continued for nearly five hours before the fire was contained.

The report said 60 firefighters from eleven different area departments, including 10 trucks designed to carry water, responded to the scene, was contained to the main building behind the silos on the property. NBC4 reported the glow from the flames could be seen a few miles away.

Whitmer Woodworks is a family-owned business since 1996 that specializes in home improvements such as custom moldings, archways, exterior trim and window frames along with other restorations, home repair and new builds.

Union County EMS reports there are no injuries. The Pleasant Valley Fire district said the Woodworks building is a total loss and the cause remains under investigation.
