COLUMBUS (WCMH) – This week’s NBC4 Today’s Little Big Shots segment may have you testing your intelligence.
Aiden Clerico, 14, is an 8th grader at West Jefferson Middle School. At the end of May, he will be heading to Washington, D.C. to take part in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Aiden earned his spot after winning the regional bee at Ohio University.
This will be his first time going to D.C. for the National Bee. He comes from a family of spellers so spelling is in his genes.
He’s been studying for hours to prepare for the competition, going over and memorizing more than 600 words in hopes of making it to the televised rounds on ESPN.
“It’s a lot. Some of these words I’ve never heard of. There are some words that you can’t really go off of root words or patterns and you’re just going to have to memorize them,” said Clerico.
NBC4 Today co-anchor Matt Barnes challenged Aiden to a spelling bee to see if he could match his spelling skills.
The bee was moderated by NBC4 reporter Olivia Fecteau, who herself competed in the National Bee in 2003. Check out the competition in the video above!
