Jumping on the CBJ bandwagon: the top 5 things you need to know

Local News

There are a lot of people jumping on the Columbus Blue Jackets bandwagon after their historic sweep of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. NBC4 has the top five things you need to know if you want to be one of them.

5. Everyone is welcome

“People who are like, ‘oh, you’re bandwagon, fair-weather– that’s silly,” said NBC4 Today anchor Monica Day. “The more people the better. The louder [the better]. [The players] feel it. They feel the energy.”

“I don’t care if you don’t anything about the team. If you know how to cheer… if you know that a puck in the net its good for the Columbus Blue Jackets… then kudos,” NBC4 Today anchor Matt Barnes added. “Jump on board everyone. Don’t feel like, ‘oh I haven’t been a fan all year’ be a fan right now.”

“Bandwagoning, I think, is a blast. Everybody does it. People who say they’re not bandwagon fans are flat lying,” NBC4 sport director Jerod Smalley said.

4. Game atmosphere

JS: “If you go to to game three or four of this series in the second round, and you’re sitting in the arena and the Jackets come out for the pregame, and the cannon goes off, and you’re not prepared for it… a little part of you may die.”

MD: “And it’s loud! It’s a full on cannon.”

MB: “The visiting fans always jump, and it makes me laugh.”

3. Nicknames

“Bob” = Sergei Bobrovsky (goaltender)

“Bread” = Artemi Panarin (left wing)

“Dutchy” = Matt Duchene (centerman)

“Torts” = John Tortorella (head coach)

2. Torts interviews

MD: “You may want to watch and edited version or don’t turn it up too loud at work.”

MB: “If you have kids, just be prepared to turn it down or they’ll learn words they don’t need to learn.”

JS: “Profanity… that’s going to happen. It’s not like he’s the world’s most foul-mouthed man. He is not. Torts is actually awesome. He’s a great guy.”

1. Making history

MB: “The number one thing you need to know about the Blue Jackets– this is a hard-working team that has not had a lot of success, but this team right now is defying a lot of the odds.”

JS: “I just think it’s really cool for a team to have gone through 20 years of what Jackets fans have gone through to get this experience where finally… now they finally have a total package, a full roster… put together in a way that gives them the best cahnce possible for them to compete at the highest level.”
