Infection causes doctors to call off lifesaving kidney transplant operation for Columbus girl

COLUMBUS (WMCH) -- A heartbreaking setback tonight for a local fourth-grade student who was hoping to receive a new kidney from a Reynoldsburg teacher.

Months after we first shared the story, her family now says, little Eva Evans will not be able to receive that teacher's kidney due to an infection in her body.

10-year-old Eva has had a rough two-year battle with a rare disease called Collapsing FSGS. The last two months have been even tougher.

On July 18th, Eva was supposed to receive a kidney transplant from Reynoldsburg teacher Tanya Thomas, but an infection has forced doctors to call off the operation.

"We don't know what to do now," said Eva's mother, Alana Brown. "She said, 'Mommy you told me everything would be okay. And I don't have faith anymore.'"

About 6 weeks ago, doctors say Eva developed significant antibodies in her immune system that would attack her soon-to-be donated kidney. no longer making Tanya a match.

"Just trust God it is going to be fine. This time I had to take some time before I could tell her," said Brown.

Eva is need of an O-positive donor; this type of universal donor makes it much harder to find a match quick.

Now, this fighting 10-year-old must continue to take 20 pills a day and is hooked up to a dialysis machine 10 hours a night.

"Eva and I have a motto...'if you fight, I fight.' So if you don't give up, I'm not giving up," said Brown.

If you would like to be tested to be a donor for Eva, call The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center at 1-800-293-8965. The hospital will walk you through steps to get tested. Potential donors must have O-negative or O-positive blood. If you want to get tested specifically to be a donor for Eva, make sure to let the hospital know.
