Hundreds of firefighters are gathering in downtown Columbus to honor their fallen comrades.

The annual Columbus Division of Fire Firefighter Memorial service begins at 1:30pm at the firefighter monument at 25 Marconi Blvd. It’s a simple tradition that allows first responders to honor those who have answered their last alarm.

“It is a time to remember, reminisce and honor our first responders,” Columbus Division of Fire Chief Kevin O’Connor said. “This is a demanding profession and the core values that define who we extend beyond active duty. On this day, we come together to remember and reflect.”

Firefighters in uniform will stand at attention at the monument as the brass bell rings to acknowledge those men and women who dedicated their lives to the citizens of Columbus.

NBC4 will have the full story tonight at 6pm.
