Hundreds donate backpacks to take advantage of $4 Zoo admission

POWELL, OH (WCMH) – The first day of school is quickly approaching.

Columbus City Schools, NBC4 and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium all want to make sure it’s a great year for all students.

That’s why we’re asking you to help us “Stuff the Backpack.”

On Wednesday, hundreds of families brought backpacks filled with school supplies to the Columbus Zoo. For each backpack, a family of up to six people get admission into the zoo for just $4 total.

If you weren’t able to join us, the same special deal will be offered next Wednesday, August 8th. The first 100 people to bring a backpack will get into the zoo for free.

Carly Ann’s family decided to stuff a backpack full of supplies. She’s about to be a first grader.

“She has homeschooling because of her illnesses, so we like to try to give back to other kiddo’s like this and she gets the chance to shop for school stuff too and give it to someone else,” said her mom Alicia Adkins.

Adkins said Carly was born with spina bifida and other complications. She said they want to keep paying it forward for all the support they’ve received through Carly’s journey.

“It’s just really important that you get these supplies for these kiddo’s that don’t have them because a lot times the teachers are pulling out of their own pockets because they care and we should as a community care enough to help them out,” said Adkins.

Other people donating today know what it feels like to not have all the supplies you need to start the school year.

“I like making people happy,” said Dominique Speaks. “I know how happy I was when I first got to pick out my book bag, not being able to have one, so I just hope it brings joy to them.”

“My parents didn’t have enough money for school supplies or buying a new book bag, so it makes me feel good inside knowing I can give them something to give back to everybody,” said Kane Norris.

Another little girl decided she wanted to give back to others on her 8th birthday.

“To be nice to others,” said Adrianna Fouse. “So, they can learn and be smart.”
