Here’s how to protect your new presents from potential thieves

HILLIARD, OH (WCMH) — Christmas is here and as many families gather around the tree to open gifts, police are sharing tips on how to protect those new presents.

With many families now new owners of large electronics, officers say it is important not to leave the boxes those gifts came in, where potential thieves can see them.

“You don’t want a box out at your curb where the bad guys are going to know what you got for Christmas,” said Officer Maggie Reed, with the Hilliard Division of Police.

Reed explained it is best to hide the boxes until trash day, and then conceal what they once held.

“We always tell people, keep them somewhere in your garage,” she said. “Keep then somewhere where you can’t see them from the street and then come trash day, break them down and fold them inside out so the logo’s not showing. Take them out to the trash right before trash day.”

If you are still looking for last-minute gifts, most retailers are closed on Christmas. It is recommended that customers check ahead, before traveling to area stores.
