Gas thieves drilling holes in vehicle tanks sought

Daring thieves are on the loose in Central Ohio and they want your gas.

These aren’t your run-of-the-mill gas bandits in which they shove a rubber tube down your vehicle’s gas tank and siphon out your fuel.

These thieves are drilling or punching out a hole in the gas tank and leaving the owner bone dry.

Gahanna Police said it happened to a company’s work van on Research Road.

Riverside Methodist Hospital said thieves hit four employee vehicles in parking lots off Olentangy River Road.

In each case, police said the gas tanks were plastic, not metal.

Bill Stover, a mechanic with Bernie’s Garage and Body Shop, said punctured gas tanks are usually repaired and not replaced.

Stover said the job costs $500 and up, depending on the make and model of the vehicle and size of the gas tank.
