COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Konner Barr is this year’s drum major for The Ohio State University Marching Band and for the Gahanna native, it’s truly a dream come true.
“I’m very excited but I’m a little nervous of course,” said Barr. “Just running out and doing that backbend and front of 110,000 people is a little nerve-wracking”
“I’ve always wanted to be the drum major since I was like three years old. I was six when I was out here watching marching band practices and then you see little kids up on the hill, dressed up in their drum major uniforms watching practice and just to think, that I was that kid and the hard work it took to get here. It’s just an incredible feeling”.
NBC4 first met Konner when he was a 15-year old baton twirling national champion. Now, he’s leading The Best Damn Band In The Land. That means Script Ohio, strutting down the field and that famous backbend.
“I have definitely taken stretching classes to make sure that back it’s nice and flexible,” said Barr. “I’m a tall guy too so that makes it farther to go down and touch the plume to the ground.”
At 6-foot-4, Konner will be hard to miss, but that’s just fine with him because that’s the job.
“It’s just exciting to be part of it and a member of the marching band, let alone the drum major. The marching band works so hard behind the scenes and being able to be in front of them is a true honor”.
