Smart Columbus announced this week that a self driving shuttle will be open to passengers in the Linden area in November of 2019.

The Linden shuttle will be the second self-driving vehicle launched in Columbus. The first route opened to passengers in December 2018 and according to Smart Columbus, has transported more than 8,400 passengers around Columbus’ Scioto Mile to date.

Two autonomous, fully electric vehicles will service a 2.7 mile route, providing free rides that will connect area residents from the COTA Linden Transit Center to neighborhood destinations such as St. Stephen’s Community House, Douglas Community Recreation Center and Rosewind Resident Council. The vehicles are ADA-accessible and accommodate up to 15 passengers at one time. The shuttles travel at an electronically limited speed of 15 miles per hour. Trained operators will be on board the shuttles at all times.

“Access to mobility can bring jobs, education and health care within reach for Columbus residents,” Mayor Andrew J. Ginther said. “Through this partnership, we are leveraging new technology to connect our residents to the resources they need to live their best lives, including public transportation, affordable housing, healthy food, childcare, recreation and more. We look forward to introducing this innovative mobility service to help connect our neighbors to their community and to opportunity.”

In a media release, Smart Columbus reports that vehicle mapping and operator training along the route will begin in September. Shuttles in the Linden area are expected to open to passengers in November of 2019.
