Four wounded, including two children, after gunfire rings out at large party in Weinland Park

Local News

Two adults and two children are recovering after gunfire broke out at a large party in Weinland Park Saturday night.

According to Columbus Police, officers were dispatched to Weinland Park around 9:45pm on the report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found a 5-year-old girl who had been shot in the leg. The girl was taken to Nationwide Childrenā€™s Hospital in stable condition.

As officers worked to secure the scene, medical staff at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center reported three additional shooting victims were driven to the emergency room. Police identified the victims as Cavaris Mills, 29; Keveante Smoot, 26; and a 10-year-old girl.

Investigators say that although 150 to 200 people were at the gathering in Weinland Park, only three witnesses were willing to provide statements.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact Det. Scot Polgar with the Columbus Police Assault Unit at 614-645-0114.

The violence caused The Ohio State University to issue a campus safety alert, although none of the victims are associated with the university. OSU’s Department of Public Safety says students should be aware of their surroundings, walk with a trusted friend or co-worker when possible, and to choose an alternate route or mode of transportation if they feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
